At the school board meeting last night, principal Saraceni reported that discipline referrals were down by 70%! This was largely due to improvements made resulting from input from staff. This is what makes Ringgold special! When our staff and administrators work together and listen to one another, we can achieve great things!

Thursday was a very Patriot afternoon for the 8th graders at Ringgold Middle School. With a donation from the 917 Society, Brittany and I were able to provide each student with a copy of the US Constitution. We were joined by State Representatives Andrew Kuzma (39th) and Tim O'Neal (48th). They both spoke briefly about the importance of the Constitution and Tim O'Neal took questions from the students. Andrew brought a flag for every student and Tim brought copies of the PA State Constitution. A special thanks to principal Tim McKay and asst. principal Wesley Yates for their support in bringing this great event to the students.

SeaPerch 2023

On Saturday, March 25, I had the pleasure of observing the SeaPerch competition. It was the 7th year that I have helped mentor the Ringgold High School and Middle School teams in this event along with employees from Bettis Laboratory. The Navy views this as an activity that directly supports their mission and representatives were present. Mentors began working with the students in January and met for about 2 hours, once a week. As part of the SeaPerch program, students were to design, build and test underwater vehicles (robots) in preparation for the competition. They learn engineering concepts, problem solving, teamwork and technical applications while learning new skills such as drilling, soldering and wiring an electrical system. It is an opportunity for students to participate in a STEM related activity that they enjoy and allow them to demonstrate their creativity and engineering abilities. The competition consisted of an obstacle course, challenge course and technical report. This year there were 22 High School and 30 Middle School teams participating in the event. There were informational tables and fun activities for the students to participate in during the day.

"We talk about wanting the best effort from our students, faculty, and administration, we should expect the same from our Board as well."

At the March 15, 2023 meeting, the Ringgold School Board voted 5-3 to appoint Steve Toprani to fill a Board vacancy. Those voting NO felt that the Board had not adequately evaluated the 13 candidates to identify the best individual to serve on the Board. (See the remarks below, made at the meeting by School Director Maureen Ott, that describe the evaluation process.) It was apparent to many that a majority of the Board had planned the outcome all along. In particular,

  • Board members had no input regarding how the selection process and voting would be conducted.

  • Candidate interviews averaged 5 minutes each.

  • Interview questions were pre-selected and Board members were not permitted to ask follow-up questions.

  • No attempt was made to methodically narrow the field of candidates and only one name was permitted to be nominated prior to the vote.

  • The Board President (Stein) did not attend the interviews but later voted for Toprani.

  • Mr. Toprani did not attend Board meetings since he was on the board briefly in 2015, but came to the January 2023 meeting prior to the Board vacancy being publicly announced, and was seen in private discussions with several Board members.

  • A motion to table the vote to a future time was defeated 2-6.
